0 The Classic Dance - Calon Arang by Kompiang Raka


 
 
 

Calon Arang is a character in Javanese and Balinese folklore from the 12th century

It is said that the Calon Arang is a widow, strong in the black arts, which often destroy the crops and cause diseases that will come. She was a girl, named Ratna Manggali, which, though beautiful, can not get a husband because people are afraid of his mother. Because of the difficulties faced by his daughter, Calon Arang angry and he intends to seek revenge by kidnapping a young girl. He took her to the temple to be sacrificed to Goddess Durga. The next day, a big flood hit the village and many people died. The disease also appears.

King Airlangga, who have heard this, then ask for a counselor, professor Baradah, to deal with this problem. Masters Baradah then sent his disciple, Bahula professor, married to Ratna. Both are married with a big party that lasts for seven days and seven nights, and the situation returned to normal.

Calon Arang have a book that contains magical spells. One day, this book is found by the master Bahula, who handed it to the professor Baradah. Once Calon Arang know that the book had been stolen, he became angry and decided to fight the professor Baradah. Without the help of Durga, Calon Arang lose. Since he was defeated, the village was safe from the threat of black magic Calon Arang.
