Here, about 14 kilometers from the center of Lombok, precisely in Banyumulek Village, West Lombok, most of the population making pottery from clay. Banyumulek name in the local language which means the water becomes clear and finally made famous pottery-making centers in Lombok.
According to stories circulating about the hereditary Banyumulek village, women in this village is described as a pottery maker selao or barrel-shaped highly accomplished, while adult men then peddle barrel by way of bear around the village.
The women from the age of 4 or 5 years had been taught to make such small pottery ashtray. While the men in charge of looking for the clay soil directly derived from this village and if the pottery is finished, the men who drove him to this or any art shop to wholesale buyers who are usually from foreign nationals.
Within a day, a woman Banyumulek could make 10 medium-sized bowl. In addition to the barrel, the women are also capable of making pottery Banyumulek like brazier, pans, crockery, and kendai. Which is typical of this village is a traditional manufacturing process is still without the help of machines.
In making pottery, women Banyumulek only rely on hand, a brush, cutting boards, sandpaper, and a bucket of water to flatten the clay surface. Of those devices, they are able to make a barrel with a diameter of 15 centimeters of height can reach one meter. After the pottery is formed and has been smoothed with sandpaper, the next stage which is burning.
Pottery or earthenware has been used by humans since thousands of years ago. History records, this thing has existed since Neolithic times when humans began to live sedentary, farming, and to know fire. In Lombok, pottery-making tradition in the village we can see Banyumulek.
Another story which illustrates the closeness with the people of Lombok pottery is beautifully portrayed in folklore (legends) on Dewi Anjani. According to the legend, Dewi Anjani sent a messenger bird (Manuk BRE) to help pair the confusion boil their first rice harvest. Through the bird, Dewi Anjani and teach humans to cultivate the land of the mountain into the pot. Perhaps, this little story illustrates how people of Lombok had always been close and cultivate the craft of pottery.
